First Week and Assignment at WFC!

On our first day we visited the V&A Club To Catwalk Exhibition.  I was really looking forward to this as I had hoped to see this is at some point before the exhibit ended. It showed how club culture influenced and translated onto the catwalk in the 1980's. If you thought 80's was just legwarmers and bangles think again! It was really interesting and this was also really good way of getting to know fellow classmates in a more relaxed atmosphere than at the college.

No rest for us though as our very first assignment came from this visit. We were split into teams of two and were given a style of the 80's as our inspiration (such as rave and goth) and then we would all make a 80's style dress and we would alter and add to our dress to fit in with our assigned style.
I was teamed with the lovely Isabella who I had not had the chance to chat to previously. We were given the style of Glam Fetish. Our next step was to discover exactly what this meant. We went back to the Glam Fetish section. We noted lots of leather, buckles and gold and black. Styled with large jewelry.
The rest of the week we worked on a mood board to really get the feel for Glam Fetish and gather inspiration.  Be warned searching for Glam Fetish in Google can be a bit dangerous, you end up with some slightly er non fashion related results!

We were all given the Scarlett Dress pattern. We would all be making one dress per team. We looked at the basic dress pattern and then next was to pop our ideas onto paper with some sketches.

We all had to keep the pleats at the side in. We decided to try changing up the hemline and the sleeves in our sketches for some inspiration.
My sketches for the design. Mainly concentrating on changing the sleeves and hemline.

After discussing with my team mate isabella we decided to keep the sleeves long and the skirt as long as possible giving it a completely covered look. We took inspiration from fetish where full body suits are worn. Also with the back being low and open and felt this would be a good contrast to being fully covered up in the front. The dress was to be made from calico which we could dye or decorate however we wanted. We decided to dye it black as we could not make in from leather and we felt dying it gold would make the material look cheap and we wouldn't be able to get the desired effect. This was decided as  felt black is a classic fetish colour, taking inspiration from latex and leather.
